Celebrating Our Volunteers

Doc’s Memorial Outdoor Adventures does not exist without the volunteers and their passion to get youth outside. There are not enough words to adequately express a “Thank You”. These volunteers have collectively spent thousands of hours in a blind, cleaning rack, target range or cook stove.

Michael Staten

Mike has been a public educator in science and outdoor education for the past 30 years, and he is extremely passionate about sharing the outdoors with young people.  Michael has been a lifelong outdoorsman in the areas of hunting, fishing, camping, birdwatching, field to table, and hiking.  His hunting interests include deer, dove, wild hogs, pronghorn, and especially turkey.  In fact, he enjoys turkey hunting so much that he makes custom turkey calls and guides others during spring turkey season.  As a result of his interests and passions, he is very involved with the Texas Youth Hunting Program as a Huntmaster and hunting guide.

Mark and Whitney Mota

Mark and Whitney were inspired by the intentionality Mr. Martz puts in his Outdoor Trails class, of which two of their kids have had the pleasure of experiencing. Mark and Whitney have a passion to mentor the next generation through a variety of volunteer opportunities. Plus, it allows them to spend more time with their three children, and one more arriving later this year. They enjoy outdoor activities with family and friends including but not limited to: camping (glamping according to Whitney), hunting, shooting, fishing, and biking to name a few. Mark first taught the next generation when he worked at Win Kids, a local sports and learning center in Flower Mound. He is currently a supervisor for a commercial electrical contractor. He also served 16 years in the Army Reserves with many experiences such as, conducting weapon ranges, and training soldiers basic rifle marksmanship. Whitney has been in the medical field for 15 years. Having a strong passion for helping others, she became a Registered Nurse in 2017.

Jeff Smith

Jeff Smith has been a firefighter/paramedic for over 30 years. He has been involved with youth hunting for many years considering he has two sons who enjoy the outdoors as much as he does. His passion is focused on bird hunting and just being outdoors, but he also enjoys spending as much time as possible in the deer stand with youth hunters.

David White (Bio Coming Soon)

Matthew McGinnis

(Author’s Notes) Matthew began in the program while in elementary school. He went on hunting trips as camp help/fire tender. In his middle school years he was able to finally hunt with the group, harvesting whitetail does and bucks, and a pronghorn antelope. Matthew has since made the progression to guide, and he has helped many youth with their first harvest. He is what this program, and being an outdoorsman, is all about. He has attained the “give back stage” very early in his hunting career, which is a testament to his character. Matthew obtained his private pilots license in July of 2023 between his junior and senior year of high school in an Air Force sponsored program/camp.

“Howdy, I’m Matt McGinnis! I’m a trained Hunters Ed instructor aid, two year member of the Marcus Clay Target team, and a four year employee at Triumph Sporting Arms in Flower Mound Texas! My goal is to teach the next generation about how to be safe and enjoy the outdoors.”

Evan Worthington

Evan is a former student who has chosen to come back and “pay it forward” to the next generation.

Howdy, my name is Evan. Here are a couple things I’d like to tell you about myself. I’m an avid hunter and fisherman. Fishing has always been a huge staple of my childhood and it’s something I enjoy as well as teaching others to do, it’s therapeutic and there nothing like setting the hook and feeling the fight come alive. When I’m not hunting or fishing I coach softball for HVA. I have been hunting, fishing, and experiencing all that wildlife has to offer since I was six years old. I love having the opportunity to share my knowledge and love for the outdoors while hoping to give you guys the same love and experience that nature has offered and given me for many years and hopefully many more to come. I look forward to see y’all in the woods.

Rick Murphy (Coach Murph)

Rick spent much of his career in Technical Service, Plant Engineering and Safety Management. Rick’s interest in outdoor sports lead him back to education and coaching. He loves teaching young people and seeing them grow.
